It's official! I will be off to the Arctic in early July for the 66 Day Circumnavigation of the Arctic. Fifteen years ago I boarded the same Russian icebreaker - Kapitan Khlebnikov - for a Circumnavigation of Antarctica. 12,565 miles, 400 rolls of film, and 52 hours of video, I arrived back home with intriguing images and fond memories of the white continent.
This time - instead of the "bottom" of the world, this voyage will take me around the "top" of the world, circling the globe in the high Arctic, to areas seldom visited. I like to think of this as a "grand lap" of the world, as I put the final touches on the 360° World Atlas Global Edition, to be released later this year. Adding images from this trip to the Atlas project will be my goal.
Packing for a 66 day trip is easier than you can imagine. Start with full size toiletries, nothing small, as it has to last for over two months. The Khlebnikov has a laundry service onboard, so that makes wardrobe choices quick. The hard part is packing the camera equipment. No replacements once on board, so you have to have the gear and the tools to make things work.
Between now and departure I will have a few more posts, then the adventure begins!
